There is a close correlation between the island of Menorca and the gin Xoriguer; ' el ginet ' is one of the most typical drinks that locals and tourists sip in Ciutadella on warm summer evenings.
The history of gin in Menorca dates back to the time of British colonization. During that period, in the eighteenth century, they began to import juniper berries using the alcoholic products of the island to elaborate the final product, the gin precisely. Even after the departure of the British the people of the island have kept the production of this drink in the time and it had become so popular as to be present in all the festivals and local events. But it was thanks to Miguel Pons, owner of the Xoriguer Windmill that appears on the famous label of the bottle, that a craft tradition has turned into a modern company. In 1997 the Gin Xoriguer received the ‘Geographical Designation of Origin' Gin of Menorca '. Today the gin Xoriguer is located throughout the island but the distillery is at the port of Mahon. The distillation takes place in copper stills, then it is placed in barrels of oak, not to age but to refine the decided taste. The typical drink of Menorca, the 'Pomada' consists of a mixture of gin of Menorca, crushed ice and lemon juice: it is like a lemon flavored granita with gin.
