In the middle of an ancient and mystical land like Umbria there is a cellar that is above all a work of art: The Carapace Tenute Castelbuono of the Lunelli family. The carapace of Arnaldo Pomodoro is an incredible place, a structure in the shape of a turtle shell, the carapace precisely, nestled among the vineyards between Montefalco and Assisi, where nature, wine and art dialogue with each other. The carapace, synonymous with longevity and slowness, is the perfect metaphor for the wine symbol of this land, the Sagrantino, which ages slowly and able to give wines of great structure and character. Built between 2005 and 2012 after a long study of materials, it features a wooden structure (pause inside to admire it) and a copper dome that has changed color over the years for oxidation resulting in a real process of integration in the territory. Going down a flight of scenic stairs you find yourself in a casket where the wine is kept. The tasting in the reception room, in front of the all-round windows overlooking the vineyards, is beautiful. Since 2014 the production is certified organic wines and the distribution takes place in 50 countries of the world, following the channels of Ferrari.
My preferences among the wines tasted: Montefalco Rosso DOC Ziggurat 2017, Sangiovese 70% and Sagrantino 15%, great for a barbecue between friends and in combination with medium-aged cheeses. Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG Carapace 2015, 100% Sagrantino grapes, intense scents and elegant and persistent taste, for its structure is indicated by combinations with more elaborate dishes such as those of meat, for example with a typical dish of the Umbrian tradition, the duck with Black truffle of Norcia.
